What’s your favorite search engine? Google is by far the favorite. Here are the answers we received:
What is your favorite search engine and why?
It depends upon what I’m looking for. There’s the conventional search engines, such as Yahoo and Excite, and then specific search engines that will help you to find things, such as movies and music.
There’s a company called Dogpile. It’s one of the main search engines that I use. And HotBot picks up more obscure sites that I wouldn’t pick up with Dog Pile. And C4 is another.
I prefer and lean towards meta search engines because you get more for your buck.

Google is by far the best engine due to its simplicity and accuracy of search results.
The fact that they do not obscure paid advertisers with the search results is also another reason I only use Google.

I use AltaVista. The real truth is simple: I liked it initially because it was straightforward and easy to use. I have not compared it to others for a long time because I am a creature of habit and perhaps too busy.
-Robert Pasenko, BS ’97, MS ’99
I would say Google. It’s fast.
-Hongming Liu, MS ’00
I believe that Yahoo is the best engine because it returns the most accurate search results. I’ve been using Yahoo for a long time, and as of today, I have not come across another engine that is as efficient.
-Katina Neal-Andrews, BS ’99
Google is the best search engine because it gives you best results!

Google, of course, although it is getting worse. It used to seem almost psychic—and with no ads—but now they have “sponsored links.”
Also, the results don’t seem to be quite as dead on. At least they let you know that a link is sponsored, unlike some search engines that put paid links before others.

Dogpile. It’s a meta-search engine. The best ones that Dogpile accesses are Google and GoTo.
-Bob Von Moss, MS ’98
I default to Google. It’s fast and reasonably thorough.
-Joe McGinnis, MS ’85
Google. It’s fast, great, no banners.
-Jean-Philippe Labruyere, visiting instructor
Google because I found it more accurate, comprehensive, and it gives you cache feature.
-Ehab Al-Shaer, assistant professor
My favorite by a wide margin: Google. Why? Extremely reliable search results.
-Curt White, associate professor
Google: it’s fast and thorough. No contest.
-Marty Kalin, associate dean
I like AltaVista because I work in the Information Technology sector and have found that they do the best searches in this area.
